How so? If anything, GPL stuff should be more freely available than BSD and derived works, since the GPL requires redistribution be free, but the BSD licence doesn't.

For me, the biggest con of Gentoo is that you have to have a broadband connection to install it - unless you're very patient. That's why I prefer LRs-Linux, which installs Linux From Scratch (plus extras) direct from a CD.

First thing I'd do is try to find apachectl using brute force, thus:

Code: Select all

find / -name apachectl
If you find it, move or copy it to where you think it should be. If you don't find it, come back here and tell us...

Calum, if you're used to Mandrake, I doubt you'd ever be happy with Lycoris. No GNOME, no development tools by default, and lots of other bits missing - the point being not to confuse the new user with too many choices. At least, that's what it was like when I tried it. If you look carefully, you'll also see that they're both wearing what appear to be pale blue V-neck sweaters. So not only are they faceless, they also have pretty dreadful fashion sense too.

Creepy icons

Have a look at this private message icon:

The individuals portrayed in this icon appear to have no faces. Am I the only one who finds this a bit creepy?

^This is more of a Turd-to-OOo/Writer problem than a MS-to-Linux problem. Just shows how set in our ways we can become with certain bits of software!

When I open multiple documents it opens multiple writer windows and I use ALT+TAB to switch between them. Isn't Alt+Tab a general window switcher, though? The user in question needs a Writer-specific window switcher, but I'll suggest that and see if it works. And yes, if you File->Close it will clo...

I don't - it's the wife. She's used to MS Turd, you see...

Anyhow, thanks for the tip about the OOo mailing lists. I'll give them a try.
