Ok so this may have been another waste of posting space by me. Have figured out my own mess  Unless anyone has a better suggestion my additions to the menu.lst worked just fine. Oh with the exception of this line: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.27 root=/dev/hdb2 ro quiet splash and kernel /boot/vmli...

Panic over, half fixed it now. (Knoppix Live CD allowed me to fix the grub file) 1. Goto knoppix.org, download the knoppix live CD image file, and burn it onto a blank CD. This will enable you to boot into a linux OS, which contains all the tools you'll need to fix the hard drive. 2. Boot the konppi...

OOOps need help repairing my boot loader (GRUB)

OK. I have had Ubuntu running just about fine for a few days now and I was very happy with it. I decided to follow someone else's instructions for getting a Knoppix HDD install on my second HDD, and in all fairness their instructions where OK and it did what they said it would, unfortunately they ne...

oh, will look at that, especially the "easy" one you mentioned.

Well there's a new kernel now so I might as well get it, if it don't work I can always follow Voids excellent instructions on compiling my source and following a methind that does work for me.

Thanks again

Can you use Synaptic to install Kernal source - UBUNTU

Just a question.

So far I have no need to do this, but can you use Synaptic to install kernel source?

or do you need to use apt?

something like

Code: Select all

apt-get install kernel-source<version>
??

Just for my info

Well thanks for the info Synaptic did make installing gdesklets a DAMN site easier. Unfortunately after all of that the sysinfo desklet I wanted did not work, I just kept getting little diamond shapes on the desktop, and for some reason my splash screen (when I log in to FC) just lingers around now,...

Not been lazy, I will look for my self, but you got a how to for getting gdesklets onto FC? One of things I like synaptic for is because it made installing gdesklets a doddle on the ubuntu machine. I am going to see if its as easy under FC3 using synaptic, as so far I have been unable to get the dam...

Mandrake Move (install question)

I have a CD from a friend, it has got mandrake move wrote on the CD, so I am assuming that is what it is, the CD appears to be a live CD, but is nice enough, I would like to install Mandrake to have a look at it, and use it as a fully installed OS for a while. Is there a command that will allow me t...

I like it so far, once I could get into the GUI I was able to configure my network connection (ethernet) and all seems to be fine. The mouse problem is actually unrelated to Ubuntu I think. Everytime I restart the computer, my mouse does not seem to work, I have to disconnect it and reconnect, it th...

OK Think I got it Now, took info from the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 from the Live CD When the CD is booting, it creates a File System, I looked at the XF86Config-4, wrote down the differences in the device section, rebooted, logged in (in text mode) sudo emacs /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and changed the follo...

Hello, I think that thread is for cards considerably newer than mine, I have 'clicked' on to a way for me to post my log file etc, as I think I said, the Ubuntu Live CD works a treat on my system, just have to set the network card up, and I ready to go. As such I have got READ ONLY access to my HDD,...

don't know about x.org, this is new stuff to me, I am still trying to find my feet with Fedora, had another machine, so thought I would have a blast at an install of ubuntu. The Cd is a shipped one, and the odd thing (to me anyway) is that the live CD works fine on this machine, I was running from t...
