Most of the dvd players out there will gladly play divX, the problem lies with divX 3.11, many of them won't play movies encoded with the hacked M$ codec, or if they do play the movie it often is choppy.
I have a Philips DVP630 and it plays all versions of divX and mpeg files I've ever thrown at it.

What's up with all those patent deals between Micro$haft and linux vendors? First Novell, then Xandros and now Linspire, ... Not that I particularly like Xandros or Linspire, but still ... Who's next, and what kind of repercussions in the long run will all of this have on the distros that don't wish...

You have to look at the supported compression formats, if MPEG1 and MPEG2 are listed you should be safe. Also you can look if the dvd player can play VCD and SVCD files, if it's the case you also should be ok. (You can find all this pretty easily in the specs on the manufacturer's website) Like you ...

You have to put the ip address(es) of your dns in /etc/resolv.conf but this shouldn't affect your ability to browse local files. If you can ping the pc's then you could try to use scp to move files around, see if that works. If it works you're probably missing a package to be able to do it graphical...

I wasn't aware of the fat32 limitations regarding permissions so I reformated the whole drive to one big ext3 partition. rsync-ing everything back to the drive atm. Thanks for the help though, I have this mobile drive which is fat32 as well and which I use to carry my media files around so I might r...
