also, the dpkg/rpm nightmare might be an adventure! why not live life on the edge?!? LOL, going for a Debian install is "on the edge" enough for now :D I mean, I've got a more or less stable system right now but it's not like I'm on top of things yet, just take a look at how many questions I still ...

The repository for Flash player is rpm http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/macromedia/apt/ redhat/8.0 macromedia and I included that one a long time ago, never had an issue with it. From what I can see there's nothing else in there, could that really be the source of all this? Should I remove it from my sourc...

It's because of an update of libdvdnav, from the moment it is selected, mplayer gets on the list of packages to be removed, and when I choose to keep mplayer synaptic refuses to do anything else because of broken dependencies .... ?????? I see the skins listed though, but there is no version number ...

mplayer still in the freshrpm repositories?

If I do a dist upgrade synaptic wants to remove mplayer and install a bunch of other libraries from xine and ogle. What bothers me is that I don't see mplayer listed as available anymore, so if I proceed and let synaptic uninstall it I might not be able to install, it again and I really don't feel l...

Not 100% sure about this but when I installed the ogg vorbis encoder I didn't have to plug it in grip, it showed up in the "encoder" tab under "Config" so it might be the same with gogo. As a matter of fact I didn't install gogo and I can select it as an encoder. With which distro are you doing this...

Debian and rpm?

I grew interested in Debian lately and downloaded the 7 cd's to try it out, so I'm reading a lot first to avoid unpleasant surprises. I read that one could install rpm packages with Debian, even rpm's made for Red Hat (using a program called "alien"). I'm confused about this, what's the point of the...

If you have Google in Dutch, why not Mozilla and KDE with it? I assume you're asking why Mozilla and KDE are in English? :) Explanation is fairly simple, all the software that I use is in English since I think English is the closest we can get to a universally spoken language. Plus, when I first en...

Source packages may not be quite as strict on versions when it comes to dependencies which isn't necessarily a good thing On a few occasions I attempted to build an rpm package from a tarball. Could this be the reason why they never seemed to install or gave me tons of dependency errors? I'll try t...

"dependency hell" question

Most of the linux users know this, and at some stage most of us have experienced something similar to "dependency hell". Now I hear lots of people say "I use Gentoo/Debian/Slackware and I never have dependency problems"! Is "dependency hell" purely rpm-related and non-existant when you install from ...

Linux and ADSL web access?

I have cable so this doesn't apply to me at the moment, but I might get a xDSL connection in the near future. I rad a lot of stuff about people having trouble to connect to the web using Alactel Speedtouch USB modems, sometimes it works, sometimes it takes effort to make it work and sometimes it sim...

Site update

Thank you all for the feedback you gave me so far. I've added links to the validator pages and updated the rpm -qil reminder (thanks Void). I noticed that I had a lot of visitors from various countries using various OS'es and browsers and I haven't got any negative comment about distorted or displac...
