I don't place any specific files under /, I watch the log space and I periodically run apt-get clean and still I have less than 1GB free space left on /
I have lots of software installed though ...

Ok so basically I would jjust partition the entire drive in a similar way to the old one, only larger partitions and the do dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/sda since I indeed replace an old machine (IDE drives) withh a new one (SATA drives) I assume I can do that with a regular knoppix cd? EDIT: I seem to re...

new install

tonight I will get my hands on a shiny new Core 2 Duo system with a 320GB hard drive. What would be my best option, do a full reinstall and then move my files from /home manually to the new system or could I transfer my existing system to the larger hard drive. I cannot use the exact same partition ...

Turns out Void was right once again, it was a faulty drive. hda is fine but as soon as i plug in hdb the pc won't boot. Is there any way I could try to get back what's on there? That drive doesn't contain anything crucial that wasn't backed up but there are a couple of convenient things I'd like not...

That's what I first thought too, but I have 2 hard drives plugged into the IDE controller and none of them show up during boot sequence.
Plus In opened the case and I can feel the master hard drive spinning
But I'll try to see if I can find a spare IDE connection on one of the other machines

boot from secondary IDE controller

Is this possible? Last night my pc froze completely, I tried to reboot but it stayed like forever on the first screen. Hit DEL to enter stup, waited for about 10 minutes for the BIOS screen to show, only to see "PRIMARY IDE NOT INSTALLED" so apparently my primary IDE controller died last night. Coul...

The references on LQ that I saw were dealing with some fairly old kernels. What's the latest kernel version you saw claiming to have trouble? Well, you read the same post as I did, it mentions 2.6.12, a couple of FC3 and 4 users and a debian testing user who posted in january 2007 so if I had to gu...

Void Main wrote: Is it something with the USB interface that is incompatible or are all drives of that size an issue regardless of interface? Don't know that yet. I've been talking to the sales rep/pre-sales who handles our account and apparently the capacities which suffer from this "design flaw" ...

I googled the subject a little and all the problems happened with 400GB or 500GB drives. I also own a couple of drives (highest capacity being 320GB) and never had a similar problem, but the LQ thread lists a couple of people with different distros ranging from FC to Mandriva to plain debian ... I w...

We all better be careful with the drives we purchase. I stumbled on this thread earlier today after having received a mail from my contact with WD. In the utterly positive comments that he attached to his mail there was one which caught my attention because it was entitled "Don't get your hopes up w...

I had a Plextor drive clicking and not being recognized a while back. Turned out the power supply was insufficient when it was only plugged in the usb port so I had to use the power adapter as well, once I did that the drive functioned as intended. Probably nothing to do with this case but you never...
