No need to send SuSE 8.2 George. I got it (the pro edition) 2 days ago from a friend and I really don't know what to say first! Ok, if I have to sum everything up in a single sentence, it would be something like: This is absolutely the easiest, most stable, most configurable and all in all best Linu...

I agree with Ice-9 that this is a bit tricky. My Toshiba laptop (Celeron 1.33) supports only PC100 as well. More RAM however is always definitely worth it, so I'd recommend also that you get more RAM.

Oh, and consult your motherboard's manual as Ice-9 mentioned. :)

That'd be great! PM me for the rest! I'm currently using RH8.0 but since SuSE has always been my favorite and you guys rave about how great 8.2 is, I'd be more than happy to give it a try.

But GNU is againt the open-source movement! Actually, they're not. As Calum wrote, both movements take a different approach to the same goal actually. What the FSF does, is simply discourage the use of terms such as 'open' when referring to Free Software, to avoid the conflict of those terms...

Wow, X11 has really become a good will ambassador for promote-opensource. :D I was thinking about mentioning it here at void's forums but I didn't know if you'd like it or not. Well, since you like it, let me say a few things about the site. 1) The promote-opensource page relies heavily on what the ...

OO stands for object-oriented programming and not Open Source software, true. I'm curious about that as well. As for the original question, we should be realistic. Companies or software vendors can of course charge for GPL'd software. However it's more than certain that they wouldn't make any profit...

Oh yeah, i didnt mean to say that RH cannot be used as a Desktop OS. It can act as Desktop OS with no problem what so ever. Nothing is missing for the user to have a pleasent time doing his desktop work. Its just that RH has more GUI utilities to monitor if you use it as a server with the X "turned...

2 things:

1) Many thanks to Void for creating a YDL forum. Us Macies needed that. Thanks Void!

2) Muffin Man, welcome to Void's boards! At least we can have some serious and more substantial discussion here, most of all though a troll-free one. :D

Giorgo (bazoukas), you're certainly not the only one running SuSE Linux. :D I'm using SuSE Linux since version 6.2 in fact and I could say that it's my distro of choice. However, I have some complaints from 8.1: 1) What the hell did they put that OOo icon on the freakin desktop? Each time you click ...

You're definitely not out of line Void and I happen to agree with you as well as with others on that. This kind of behaviour, especially when it comes from a pro-Linux site or magazine, is totally unacceptable.

You guys covered pretty much everything I might have added, so I'm just going to testify my experience with OOo. I never considered OOo to be slow at startup, especially since I used to use StarOffice until version 5.2. Now, StarOffice was SLOOW and compared to that OOo is fast. I also experience th...

Thats a really good article. If/When I meet you in person, I owe you a free beer. I liked the way it seems to fill everything in that most people want to know, and it was still short (well compared to the other Free Software History peices out there) You should be a Journo. That's a really well-wri...
