Fedora Core 1 - Kernel 2.4.22 ---> Kernel 2.6 ?

Postby Membrax » Sun May 02, 2004 6:59 am

Hi folks.

Running with Fedora Core 1 kernel 2.4.22-2215

...and would like to know where to find a rpm which could let me place the new 2.6 kernel on that.

:oops:

you can use the very usefull apt-get tool to download and install the newest kernel for your system. If you have apt-get just type "apt-get install kernel" which will bring up a list of kernels to choose from for your specific distro. Once you choose which kernel to install simply type "apt-get install (kernel you chose)".

This will download, install and make all neccessary updates to your system files (like your grub loader config file if you use grub). Here is an example of these 2 commands and the output you would see.

[someuser@localhost someuser]$ su -

[root@localhost root]# apt-get install kernel

Of course you will need to have root privilages to obtain the neccessary file locks required to install anything so you will need to "su" first.

If you do not have apt-get you can get it from here.
You could also try "yum" which is included in Fedora/RedHat and does basically the same thing as apt-get.

As you might have also noticed next to each kernel you have installed in the list it will show up as being installed. As you can also see there has been a new kernel released for Fedora Core 1 since last week when I last upgraded.

You won't find the 2.6 kernel on FreshRPMS, but you can add a repository that does have the latest 2.6 that will allow you to install via apt-get. See my post here:
