can't get dynamic dns working on redhat 9

Postby apox » Mon May 10, 2004 1:55 pm

I've set up a RH 9 dhcp and dynamic dns server using the example from http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/redhat/re ... c_dns.html.

DHCP works like a champ and dynamic dns works well on Windows boxes. However, I cannot get it to work with RH 9. When I try to ping across the network, I get an uknown host error. I believe that my server is set up correctly since dhcp is working properly and ddns is working on Windows. Am I missing something on the RH 9 clients? Thanks.

Did you put the name of your machine in the "Hostname" box in the network configuration? In the screenshot of my client setup you will see "laplinux" in that box:

If that's not it then DHCP must not be able to update the DNS zone. There will probably be some error messages in your messages log.

I do have my hostnames listed. I viewed /var/log/messages and was getting permission denied messages for 192.168.0.rev and voidmain.home.zone. I changed the permissions on these files and I'm no longer receiving any errors messages. I can now ping RH to RH, Windows to Windows, and Windows to RH, but cannot ping RH to Windows. Shouldn't I be able to ping from a RH box to a Windows box? I've tried to follow your configuration file as closely as possible so I think I'm missing something very easy. I can post configuration files if necessary.

Well, "ping" is actually the wrong tool to trouble-shoot a DNS issue. For DNS trouble-shooting you would use "host", "dig", or "nslookup". Of course if your "ping" command is returning an error of "ping: unknown host xxxx" then it's likely a DNS issue. Do a "host windowsbox" from any machine (or use "nslookup windowsbox" which should work on both Linux and Win). If your Win boxes aren't in DNS then you need to change your Win TCP/IP configuration. Fortunately, I can't help you with that.
