Just compiled a stock 2.6.6, but forgot to set athlon as target. Doh!
Oh well, i'll see it I can get nVidia drivers going. I will compile 2.6.7 with the proper optimisations, can't be bothered doing 2.6.6 again.

just a question...do i have to worry about optimizing for athlon if i'm just using the stock kernel (not recompiling) ?
