launching Windows X

Postby cef » Mon May 17, 2004 8:51 pm

Fairly new to Linux, dont know a lot of the commands yet

installed Red hat 9 the other day with out a hitch until i try to launch gui with startx

here is part of the error message:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I have an NVIDIA graphics card and i think the display might have something to do with the problem but i dont know how to alter ANY settings with Linux

I have also tried "editing" the XFconfig86 file but i once again am clueless.

any and all help would be greatly apreciated.

Did you install the nVidia Linux driver from the nVidia web site? If you did you'll need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config and change a couple of things. If you didn't install the nVidia driver from the nVidia web site then it should have worked if you configured X at install time. If you did not install the nVidia driver from the web site then you should be able to run the "redhat-config-xfree86" from the command line (as root) to configure it.

If none of the above helps then you'll want to look through your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file for specific error messages.

I seem to remember having issues, circa RH8/9 with dual-head video cards... are you by chance using DVI to connect to an lcd? I use DVI with mine, and I remember I had to comment some things out in /etc/X11/XF86Config in order to get it to work right. Might have been an ATI thing, but I doubt it.

Here's an old post of mine describing what I was talking about... fairly simple solution, but I don't know if this will help or not:
