FC2 lockup with screensaver

Postby dishawjp » Sun May 23, 2004 1:15 pm

Hi All,

Still in the process of finishing up my FC2 install. Overall it seems to be pretty nice, though I do have a few problems. In addition to waiting for nVIDIA to release new drivers for my GeForce 2 video card, I'm having a real problem when screensavers start up. I lock up totally, <ctrl><alt><backspace> won't even kill Xwindows. I can't access a virtual terminal (<ctrl><alt>F2 or etc., but I did manage to shutdown with <ctrl><alt><delete> eventually.

I was copying files from my FC1 install to FC2 and had to go in for an arraignment and when I got back, it was locked as described above.

Any thoughts, ideas or workarounds (other than disabling screensavers)?

My guess is that it was a GL screen saver that tried to start and I'll bet you have nVidia's libGL and libGLU hanging around somewhere that would cause that. I actually do have the nVidia driver running with FC2 although it's not very stable. There are some games the kids will play that lock it up. I would suggest waiting until nVidia get's a new driver with the 4k stacks. I downloaded a stock 2.6.6 kernel and compiled it with 8k stacks and it allowed me to run the nVidia drivers.

I've been following the forums at nVidia and they are aware of it and hope to have a new driver out soon (whatever that means). It sorta sucks too since I just went out and bought a new GF4 just days earlier. :( I should have left that desktop at FC1 until all of this was ready for prime time. I didn't seem to have any problems with the stock Mesa GL libraries and the xorg nvidia driver with the stock FC2 kernel. I did have to find some nVidia GL/GLU libraries that were laying around from before the upgrade that was causing similar problems. I'm pretty sure you're running into the same thing.

Thanks for the reply Void,

I did a "clean" install, so it shouldn't have anything to do with old librarys lying around. I completely overwrote my RH 9 install when I installed FC2. But I would expect that it is something with my nVIDIA card and not having the correct drivers.

For now, I'll just disable screensavers and shutdown if I'll be away from the computer for a while. I still have lots of work to do in copying files (and fixing permissions as I do it) from my FC1 install to FC2.

Computers are a lot like houses... the longer you use them, the more stuff seems to accumulate in them :-)

A bit off topic, but what do you think about the new Nautilus way of doing things... and the microsoftish (my) Computer icon they put into FC2?

You could try just unchecking the GL screen savers and see if that stops it. I'm thinking it might. As far as Nautilus goes, I really don't use it so I can't really comment on it. :) To me a GUI is just a place to hang shell/terminals from. :)

I have to agree in general, but I did read about the new Nautilus and so I played with it. More a thing of seeing what's new and different rather than a way of working or getting things done. Oh, one BIG advantage of the GUI over terminal mode... can't have gkrellm up on a terminal. I do feel a bit lost without that at times :-)
