missing __db.00 FC1

Postby caveman » Wed Jun 02, 2004 7:18 pm

Hi.

I was using synaptic to update my system running FC1.
Only 2 packages were out of date ie. gimp and gaim that I wanted
to have updated. Did not try the kdelib updates yet!
The packages were downloaded and whilst installing synaptic abended.

The previous time I only installed the compat libs that I needed
without any problems and all was fine since then.

After some useless looking around I discovered that there ain't
any __db.00? files in /var/lib/rpm
What gives?
Running rpm --initdb , and nothing happens - no new files
Running rpm --rebuilddb gives an error: rpmdbnextiterator skipping h#
etc. etc. and stops with a segmentation fault (my worst nightmare) and
doesn't create anything either.

Now in what kind of a state is the system? and what else can I try to fix
this?
The system was behaving itself without any hassles since I did
a clean install of RC1 some months ago, updates, new packages etc.

Have googled all over and the best I get is to try and run
rpm --rebuild a few times! done that been there and with no joy!

Any ideas anyone?

Tx in advance.

You sound like an old mainframer! :)

You really should not have any "__db.00?" files if everything is right. The only time you should see them is if an RPM command exited abnormally.

Running rpm --initdb , and nothing happens - no new files
Running rpm --rebuilddb gives an error: rpmdbnextiterator skipping h#
etc. etc. and stops with a segmentation fault (my worst nightmare) and
doesn't create anything either.

So do you have a database? That is, can you run an "rpm -qa" and get a list of installed RPMs? You certainly have a problem but most/all problems are resolvable. I will do some digging and see what I can come up with.

# mv /var/lib/rpm/Pubkeys /tmp/
# rpm --rebuilddb

Hmm.
Tx void - that post was about 2 pages further down on my google search,
that is if I ever got there ;) and might have missed it in any case

Is an interesting problem this one - yes?

Well the 2 packages were updated without a hitch and rpm -qa now
works as well.

Where I live it is now nearly 4 o'clock in the morning and I'm off to bed
to grab some shut eye before my 08h30 meetings..

Thanks again and cheers!

That's odd. It was the 2nd/3rd hit on my Google search:

http://www.google.com/search?q=rpmdbnextiterator

:)

I was a mainframe programmer in the early 90's and I was quite familiar with the term "abend" when I ran my programs. :)

heh heh
thats even (sic) par for me!

I just checked again - and sure its right in the beginning as well
and I missed it!

I reckon it comes from having more than 1 search engine going, looking
for the problem.

Thanks again.

Ya - has a nice ring to it - abended.
M$ systems go crash - the rest of them abend!
