What apps need an RPM version?

Postby Void Main » Sun Feb 09, 2003 4:29 am

I just made an RPM out of a program called "png2ico" because I didn't see any Red Hat RPM for it. I originally created my spec file and built the RPM and SRPM and then I found there was a Mandrake RPM out there for the program. I decided to download it and found the spec file to be nearly identical to what I came up with so I ended up just taking the Mandrake RPM and Red Hatify it. Since it is so small I stuck it in my files section.

I would like to try a larger program that is popular that doesn't already have an RPM for Red Hat. Maybe if I get good at it I will see if freshrpms.net would like some more contributions. Any suggestions?

hrrmmm do you mean in essence that there are RPMs for other distros but not Red Hat or that there are only source tarballs?

Sure, there are Mandrake specific RPMS (usually have "mdk" in the name). The mandrake RPM actually installed and worked fine under Red Hat but it just gave a couple of warning messages during install that it couldn't set the program to the proper user and group that was used under Mandrake. After I rebuilt it you don't get those warnings when installing on Red Hat. And not all Red Hat RPMS will work on all Red Hat versions. Depends on the dependencies of the applications within the RPM.

Ok, I went overboard and set up a Red Hat apt repository for this RPM. :) It'll be easy to add more. Too bad I'm not on a real connection...

/etc/sources.list

Code: Select all
rpm http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/ apt/redhat/8.0/en/i386 voidmain
rpm-src http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/ apt/redhat/8.0/en/i386 voidmain

# apt-get update
# apt-get install png2ico
# apt-get source png2ico
