Trouble with iptraf & FC2

Postby lovswr » Sun Jun 20, 2004 3:41 pm

Hello. I love the little utility iptraf, & as I use my FC2 box as my home "router" I leave iptraf running all the time. Since I have upgraded to FC2 from FC1 I can not get iptraf to run for more than a minute or so without getting the following error:

1492 segmentation fault.

It does not seem to matter if I use "sudo" or an actual root terminal to start iptraf.

Worst of all, even when I pc -C iptraf & get the pid & then kill it, I still have to reboot to actually get iptraf to run again. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

(it is the newest version & I used apt-get to install/uninstall several times) :?:

Hmmm, I can get it to crash too but I don't have to restart to run it again. What do you use this for? If you use it for packet capture have you tried Ethereal? I use Ethereal extensively at work.

Primarly I use it to monitor my three connections. ppp0, eth1, & eth2 (eth0 is bound to ppp0)

Sorry to bring this old thread back, but I still have this problem & it seems I have found a clue ( cue Scoobydoo :)). Iptraf only crashes when it is in promiscuos mode. That is, iptraf ran for more than 20 minutes when the only interfact with traffic ws ppp0. As soon as I added any of my other interfaces (eth1 or eth2) iptraf would crash in less than a minute with the following text:

segmentatin fault user@hostname$

Does anybody have any suggestion? Please?

edit: kernel = 2.6.8-1.521

Well, you could enable core files and examine the core dump file for other possible clues. Or get the source and add in some debugging code (or if you are good with a debugger (gdb) use that). It shouldn't be too difficult to debug since the problem can be duplicated fairly quickly. I would normally suggest posting a message on the project's mailing list but it appears that the project has been inactive for some time.
