Here, for your perusal, is the partition table we created with Partition Magic:
Dell Utility------------------FAT-------------------54.9MB
(first sector 63, last 112454)
Local Disk C---------------NTFS-----------------109552.6MB
(1st 112455, last 224476244)
Extended-------------------------------------------43017.8MB
(1st 224476245, last 312576704)
Local Disk F---------------FAT32------------------2055.2MB
(1st 224476308, last 228685274)
Local Disk E---------------FAT32------------------40962.6MB
(1st 228685338, last 312576704)
Hopefully it is clear that we created an extended partition to place Linux on, with 2 logical partitions, one for swap and one for /.
Now, my friend's computer is a newer Dell, and it has some weird stuff in it. This is what Windows reports for his hard disk controllers:
Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F
Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller (IRQ 20)
Primary IDE Channel (IDE ATA/ATAPI controller) (IRQ 14)
I am assuming that we will need to pass some arguments to the kernel, or load some weird device drivers, but I didn't see any relevant drivers in the list.
Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Google is remarkably silent when you have this much information.
