KDSKBENT, eggcups and gnome volume manager errors!

Postby dishawjp » Sat Nov 20, 2004 4:30 pm

Hi All,

Just booted up my FC3 box and got a bunch of new errors. Last night, I added some new apt repositories, I now have atrpms, dag, dries, freshrpms, newrpms and os lists. I ran update and upgrade, but when I booted today, I first got the following error during the boot process:

KDSKBENT failed to load key 255 to value 2639.

Then when I started Gnome, there were two error dialog boxes. They were:

"eggcups has quit unexpectedly" and I was able to click a "restart" button.

I also got the same thing except it was for "gnome volume manager".

I did try rebooting and the problems remained. I looked through /var/log/messages and didn't find anything there that looked related. I googled for the KDSKBENT and eggcups errors, found several references to them, but no solutions. The system seems to be working OK, I can print and all, but obviously, something is unhappy.

I'm just curious how widespread this problem is and if anyone's found any solutions.

Haven't had any FC3 errors yet....

However, I only use freshrpms and the official redhat repositories, so none of the potential apt conflicts affect me very much.

Does this look familiar?
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22765

I don't think the above message was for FC3 final because here is the version of my installed desktop-printing package:

desktop-printing-0.17-3

Are you sure those are the only apt repositories you have set up because I don't have the problem on any of my systems.

Here's my repo lines (consolidated) that I never have any problems with:

Code: Select all
dag.list:
rpm http://apt.sw.be fedora/3/en/i386 dag

dries.list:
rpm http://dries.studentenweb.org apt/fedora/fc3/i386 dries
rpm-src http://dries.studentenweb.org apt/fedora/fc3/i386 dries

freshrpms.list:
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 freshrpms
rpm-src http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 freshrpms

newrpms.list:

rpm-src http://newrpms.atrpms.net/apt/ redhat/en/i386/fc3 newrpms

os.list:
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 os updates
rpm-src http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 os updates

Hi Voidmain,

I found that and also a few including this one on the KDSKBENT issue.

http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-l ... 00926.html

Which lead me to this:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/sh ... ?id=125133

I did find a few other references to both these issues, but no solutions.

Before adding the other repositories I did read what Dag had posted about mixing repositories, but stayed away from those he advised against. I guess I should have just stuck with the freshrpms repositories I had been using. It does appear that I'm not the only one experiencing these problems and, at least so far, they're not too serious. I guess I will just live with it for a while and see if fixes are developed.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this for me, and if you should think of anything I could try, let me know.

Oh, the only repos I'm using (active uncommented lines from the files in my /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory) are the following:

rpm http://apt.sw.be fedora/3/en/i386 dag
rpm http://apt.sw.be dries/fedora/fc3/i386 dries
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 freshrpms
rpm http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/ redhat/en/i386/fc3 newrpms
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 core updates

I didn't think that any of those were too far out or unconventional.

The problem obviously must have cropped up when something was upgraded. Did you do a manual dist-upgrade? If so did you not do a "dist-clean"? If not could you check and see what packages are listed in your /var/cache/apt/archives directory? It might give us a clue.

For once, not cleaning up after myself may have been a good thing. I actually haven't done a "clean" since installing FC3.

Well, I'm thinking one or both of your problems must be related to your X upgrade. Does the DPMS thing happen only at boot? What messages are output just before and just after the DPMS message? Are you using the graphical boot (rhgb) kernel option? Also, what kernel version are you running (uname -r)?

Voidmain,

I don't use the rhgb thing, I boot to init3. The KDSKBENT happens twice, right after "sysstat" and again right after "irqbalance" or something like that. It also prints out as soon as I log in. The other two happen when I start X. I'm not quite sure what you mean by DPMS.

I meant KDSKBENT, duh. Ok, so it's after the kernel is loaded. I saw something that indicated it's bash related. If you start a new bash shell do you get the message? Just type "bash". Also, it would be handy to know what services you start in runlevel 3 and in what order:

$ ls /etc/rc3.d/S*

Voidmain,

I had a terminal window open and typed "bash" as you suggested. No message, just a return and prompt. This is what you meant?
Code: Select all
[dishawjp@eunix ~]$ bash
[dishawjp@eunix ~]$

Yes, how about "bash -l"? (lower case L)

Voidmain,

However, when I open a virtual terminal (<ctrl><alt><F2> in this case), as soon as I do login, I do get the error!

Ok, and the "bash -l" didn't give the error? How about an "su - yourusername"? I'll bet that will give an error too.

Voidmain,

"bash -l" in a terminal window also does nothing, I mean no error.
Code: Select all
[dishawjp@eunix ~]$ bash -l
[dishawjp@eunix ~]$
