a chancer has question about migrating from RH9 to FC1

Postby Calum » Fri Dec 10, 2004 4:35 pm

hi. i have installed the FC1 versions of apt from dag's site and rpm, rpm-build and rpm-python from rpm.pbone.net and i want to apt-get upgrade and get all the FC1 stuff.

BUT

when i apt-get update, i see this:

Code: Select all
[root@harvey root]# apt-get update
Get:1 http://dries.studentenweb.org apt/fedora/fc1/i386 release [483B]

Which rpm-build and rpm-python did you install? Hopefully the ones that came with RH9. Also, I am pretty sure you want the Dag's apt for RH9, not FC1. Once you have apt working for RH9 you'll have to change your sources.list file(s) and point them to the FC1 repo and then all you should have to do is:

# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade

This will not install a new kernel so you'll also have to:

# apt-get install kernel

which will give you a list of kernels to install, pick the latest one.

ok, well, the apt and rpm i installed, were correct, but i uninstalled them and installed the fc1 versions, in the (apparently) mistaken belief that they'd pull the rest of the system up by its bootstraps. So all i need to do is put the system back how it was, repoint my sources.list.d repositories to FC1 ones and go for it?

i will bear in mind not to use the fedora repositories as well, if that's what you recommend.

also, can this method be used to bump straight up to FC2 or FC3? or should i go one step at a time, as it were?

I am going to say no, at least not without a lot of pain. Actually I may have upgraded to from FC1 to FC2 with only some trouble but I never have upgraded from FC2 to FC3 via this method. I did try it unsuccessfully but did not spend a lot of time on it. I have access to a T3 (45Mbps Internet connection) so getting ISO images and doing an upgrade via CD/DVD isn't a problem for me. Everyone should have a T3. :)
