I am guessing you installed the source as root which would have placed the source and patches under /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES and you are trying to build it under your normal user account and you have a custom build root set up so it's looking for the source under your home directory. If you'll notice in my instructions I say to install the source and to build under the root account. I think if you become root (su -) you will not have this problem. I normally don't suggest building RPMs under the root account but the kernel is one package where I make an exception.

Voidman

Correct, i installed as root, and try to build as non root.

I will follow up your instructions. When i encounter any problems, i'll come back here.

Thank

edit: i made a bad start by skipping
apt-get source kernel

I see now what went wrong

hi

Sorry for my 3 posts here, but one last question.

I see a great number of options now. What do you recommend? Is there an site where al the options are explaned?

I just want to build a kernel with at least internet support. I want to install the kernel i build on a test machine.

Thanks

Most of the options have an explanation associated with them (in the lower right pane of the xconfig GUI). Other than that I don't know of any central detailed documentation on all the configuration options. Of course the best documentation is the source itself. Other than that you could search the kernel mailing list archives. I usually use all of the options that are set by default, and then make the few minor changes I am interested in.
