I was burning a dvd in FC4 yesterday, using growisofs, which doesn't eject/unmount the disc upon completion. Normally, I right-click the desktop icon to eject the disc afterwards, but this time I used the drive's own eject button. The drive ejected okay, but the cd-rom icon remained on the desktop. Attempting to eject with the icon just causes the drive tray to open. Putting a disc in the tray causes a second icon to come up on the desktop.

I figure that logging out and logging back in will clear this up. But how can I fix this without that?

Hmmm, don't think I've ever seen this problem. What if you use the "eject" command from the command line, do they stick around with that too? What software are you using when you press the eject button that causes the problem?

Inserted a blank cd to burn a Linux iso, and had 2 icons on the desktop. Weird. Then just now I inserted a blank dvd, and no second icon came up. After burning, I ejected, and all desktop icons that reference the optical drive had disappeared. So I guess that's over.

For normal ejecting, I right-click on the desktop icon and choose 'eject', which appears to also unmount.
