Ok, for some strange reason everything I could do from here was locking up so I rebooted.
I was then able to uninstall synaptic, apt and apt-devel.
I reinstalled the last rpm's, added my isp's proxy to /etc/apt/apt.conf and when I do apt-get update it times out.

Making progress though.

And now it's cool again :D
I uninstalled everything again, rebuilt my rpmdb, reinstalled apt and apt-devel, added my proxy, blah blah, installed synaptic and I just installed mplayer again.
So in the end everything is cool again.

Yeah, if you still had trouble, one last thing I was going to suggest was an "rpm --rebuilddb" but it looks like you already did this. I have about 8 machines that I run a dist-upgrade on nightly from cron and I haven't had any problems to date. The biggest problem I ever have with RPM is RH8 seems to have a buggy rpm version that occasionally hangs up and causes me to have to kill the rpm command and delete the db files in /var/lib/rpm. I hope this problem is resolved in 8.1 because it's a pain in the arse when you want to automate the upgrade and it hangs...
