i just got a USB printer/scanner all in one thing. It's light years ahead of me, our last printer was just a laser printer, the likes of which i have been familiar with since high school.
Anyway, this new piece of technology has been okay so far. I haven't tried the memory card slot things at the front yet (because the bloody camera's lost) but it printed the test page fine when i put in the ink boxes, and printed a page okay when i printed a PDF. now. i installed a bunch of stuff (as they say) to try and get the scanner part going. i installed sane, xsane, hplip, hpoj, xsane and some other stuff. When i run xsane, i get this in a diag box:
No devices available <Close> <Help>
If i click "Help", then i get six helpful reasons for failure, two of which i don't understand, one of which is definitely not the case, two that are very unlikely in my opinion and one that's dumb.
It's definitely there when i do /sbin/lsusb :
- Code: Select all
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 03f0:5d11 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0644:0000 TEAC Corp. Floppy
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:a700 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 058f:6390 Alcor Micro Corp.
I googled and found many people using different versions of linux using similar printers/scanners having similar issues. I don't understand the whole concept, never having installed or configured a scanner before, and i have no idea which things might be distro specific, or even just bad advice, as a result. Have a look at some of my fumbling around before i got frustrated and came here:
- Code: Select all

i found a page (which i now can't find again) on sourceforge with an installer and a tarball, but i would rather not install stuff if i don't have too, non-rpms at least.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance......
