Yeah I tried that, same error it is like it wont let anyone or anything connect. I managed to get in using what I said in my last post but when I issued:

show databases;

all I get is a 'test" database and not a "mysql" database. I read online that this databse is suppose to be there and is used for permissions and such.

Could this be my problem?? If so why is this not there? I cannot do anything with it like change password or configure anything because it says permission denied for everything...

Well the first thing I did was create a database and a user that had rights to create tables, etc. I used that database name and user in the setup page for phpBB. If I recall I created the database and the user using webmin (webmin really makes mysql admin stuff easy).

what is "webman"? And how did you create a database and a user with no permissions set to do so? Or did you not have this problem? What version of MySQL are you using??

Ok I got webmin up and running and it is pretty sweet. But I am still unable to create anything I believe. I do not get any errors in webmin but i try to create a user and such and not sure if that user ever showsd up in mysql..

maybe I need an older version of MySQL because this one seems to have seriuos problems..

I got the version 4.*.*

I'm running Red Hat 8.0 (kept up to date daily) with:

mysql 3.23.54a-4
mysql-server 3.23.54a-4
php-mysql 4.2.2-8.0.7
php 4.2.2-8.0.7
httpd (apache) 2.0.40-11.3 (with a few custom void hacks)
kernel 2.5.62 (and a few custom void hacks)
phpBB 2.0.4 (with some security patches and some custom void hacks to make it work with apache 2.0.40)

Yeah I just got rid of the other version of MySQL I was using and got a previous version and now the mysql database is there like it is suppose to be but I am still having to log in as the anon user and that user of course has no permissions to do anything.

How did you create the data base and user the first time? I am trying with webmin but am not having any luck!!!!

Mine worked out of the box. The MySQL root user did not have a password associated with it when I installed. If you run "mysqladmin -u root status" do you get an error?

What I am wondering is if when you remove the mysql RPMs it might be leaving your actual data/database behind in /var/lib/mysql. If you had ever set a root password then it may be hanging around, even when you remove/reinstall different versions of mysql. You might try removing the RPMs again and make sure the /var/lib/mysql directory is gone. If it's not rename or delete it and reinstall MySQL.

You also might want to try switching user to the "mysql" user before running any of the commands.

Dude!! Your somewhat of a genious =P

That was it. I renamed /var/lib/mysql and re-installed the older version of MySQL (prior to version 4.0) and it seems to be working now.

As root user I was able to change passord with mysqladmin -u password "password" and I was never able to do that before.

Thanx again...
