Sharing folders in Linux?

Postby topsoill » Thu Apr 24, 2003 9:47 pm

Is there a way to share folders like you do in windows with other computers on your LAN? For example, in windows you would have to just right click the folder and click the 'share' box and a hand would come under the folder. How would you do something like that in Linux? I have a linux box and two Windows XP pro boxes which is would like to share files from.

Thanks.

Sorry if this is a easy question. Just trying to learn here bit by bit. I do however think it has something to do with Samba or Lisa.

Using RH 9.

It's funny we were just discussing this today. Here is Red Hat's Samba chapter in the manual. Just click the "Next" link on that page to get started.

Thanks. I kind of got it to work. The thing is that i can access the shared folders of my windows boxes from my RH box. The only share i can't access through the RH box is the 'localhost' one. I go into nautilus and do this: smb:.
It then gives me the workgroup name. I click on that and i get the names of the other computers and the localhost. Clicking on localhost gives me the name of the shared folder on the RH box. When i click on that i get this error:

"Sorry, couldn't display all contents of blah"

If i try to access the same folder in the windows box, i get that i don't have permission or the network path doesn't exist.

The folder i am trying to share is /home/topsoill

/Edit: Nevermind. I got it to work. Thanks for the help.

Question: How do you access samba via konqueror file browser?

There are a couple of ways in KDE. You can set up lisa/reslisa and set up your networking parameters and default login Workgroup/ID/password so you can browse and click on shares by going to the "lan:/" URL but I've always found getting lisa/reslisa running properly to be a little bit of a pain.

You can do a "smb://servername" where it may prompt you for an ID/Password, or you can pass the ID/Password in the url "smb://userid:password@servername". Of course you can also go directly to a share by "smb://userid@servername/sharename".

On a side note, you can also do these from a run box (ALT+F2). And going from Linux->Linux I prefer to use ssh rather than Samba. You can use konqueror over ssh in a similar way "fish://username@servername" (actually I am lying, I don't actually use any graphical file manager tools, but if I did that is how I would do it). :)

Hope that helps.

Easier? They are pretty much the same aren't they? I would use whatever goes with the desktop environment I am using. That would be Nautilus for Gnome and Konqueror for KDE, but what do I know, I just use bash in both cases. :)
