Red Lock on Files??

Postby hollywood » Wed Sep 10, 2003 4:26 pm

Ok here we go again I was trying different distro's and ended back to Red Hat 9. which is my favorite so far. I just have to learn all of the ins and outs. After reinstalling RH 9 I moved all my saved files over from a cd. All of the files that I moved have a little red lock to the upper right of the folder icon and I can't save anything to them. This happened the first time I installed RH 9 but I can not for the life of me remember what I did to fix it. Any thoughts
Thanks Art :D

Hmmm, I don't use a graphical file manager so I don't know if I'll be able to help but I would bet it has something to do with file permissions and ownership. The default graphical file manager in Red Hat 9 is Nautilus under Gnome, are you running something different? If you are running Nautilus just press F1 and it has lots of good help in there about how to copy files, what the read only emblems look like, etc.

Might I also suggest that you look over this:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linu ... ted-guide/

More specifically sections 13.14, heck 13.*, and 14.*.
