odd new directories on /

Hi All,

I guess I have more problems with Red Hat then most, but this one isn't serious. I recently was poking around on my RH9 install and found a bunch of directories on my root like:

/pt
/es
/it

and etc. I think that there were about 6 of them, and all they had in common is that they were two letter, lower case directories which were empty except for a single subdirectory named "LC_MESSAGES"

I Googled "LC_MESSAGES" and got a lot of returns, but none seemed to explain what these empty directories were. They must be pretty common thought from the number of returns I got. I deleted them and no harm was done, but I am curious about where they came from and what they were all about.

Any thoughts?

Well those two letter directories sound like the abbreviations for foreign language components, eg 'ese' for spanish. Have you recently compiled any source or an srpm that might have installed some of its junk right at / because of bad configure options or something?
Check the dates on the directories and see if they coincide with something you recently installed. That is about all I can think of right now, back to my maths...

I agree with Tux, those are Language directories that probably came from a bad RPM or similar. If they are part of an installed RPM you can find out by doing:

$ rpm -qif /pt

But no, they shouldn't be there.

I did delete them, maybe a bit too quickly. I haven't compiled any source rpm's or anything similar lately. I was surprised that they had somehow managed to get written to my "/" directory though.

As long as it's not an indication of anything serious going on... no biggie.
