apt-get?

Postby ZiaTioN » Tue Oct 28, 2003 12:24 am

I would like to run apt-get on my system but would like to ask a few questions first. What makes apt-get so much better than "up2date"? Does apt-get give you automatic alerts as soon as new patches or releases are available? Is apt-get more versatile than up2date?

I would suggest you look over my tip in this area:

I can't speak much for up2date as I actually have never used it in my 10 years of using Red Hat (of course up2date isn't that old). I can say that I use apt-get to keep my system up to date using a little script I wrote (also linked to in the above URL). up2date as far as I know will only manage Red Hat supplied RPMS where apt-get will manage not only those but any other RPMS in any other apt RPM repository that you point to (I caution just adding gobs of repositories though). The new Red Hat (Fedora) will actually be switching to apt-get or yum (not 100% on that, might want to verify). I even did wholesale upgrades from Red Hat 8 to Red Hat 9 on all of my machines using apt-get.
