Hi All,
I just installed Fedora Core 1 and am still trying to get used to it. One thing that gave me a bit of trouble but I just solved was getting the (formerly) simple command of "/sbin/ifup ppp0" to work to get on line! I thought that that was a standard Linux thing, but I had to copy my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-myISPname file to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ppp0 to get the command to work. They must have changed something in "neat" or maybe I should have had a beer or six fewer when I was setting that up.
I also had some trouble with the "smartd" thing on login and, for now have disabled it with the "/sbin/chkconfig --del smartd" command. I'll look into it further when I have a chance.
Other than these few issues (with a good half an hour playing with it) it seems to be ok. I do like the fact that Open Office does seem to be a lot quicker to open, but I still have to deal with installing the nVidia drivers which I've read can be a bit of a problem. I also still have to get apt4rpm installed, but have to cruise the internet a bit to find an apt repository for Fedora Core.
I kind of miss Galeon which was my favorite web browser and may install it anyway. I thought that I had installed Enlightenment which was supposed to be the replacement for Galeon, but can't seem to find it in the menu, and bash just complains about "command not found." Maybe the install just missed it, or maybe I even have the program name wrong.
I'm sure that I'll be back before long begging for help from all you gurus before too long; just wanted to say "hi" and say a few words about Fedora.
Jim
