usb dvd?

Hi All,

I just got my daughter an external (usb) DVD RW for Christmas. She's running FC1. I plugged it in and my fstab is reading it as /dev/cdrom2. There are two other optical drives on the computer already. I can mount it and it puts a CD icon on the desktop and can read the files (through Nautilus) but when I try to play a DVD using gmplayer, I get an error "unable to open IFO file."

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Is /dev/dvd symlinked properly? ie. to /dev/cdrom2

Thanks for the response. I did create the symlink, I hope I did it properly...

ln -s /dev/cdrom2 /dev/dvd

The odd thing is that I can mount the device and see the files on the DVD in the drive... I just get that frigging error message when I point gmplayer to the drive. But gmplayer works perfectly for playing CD movies in .avi file formats. I've been through the settings on gmplayer and all, but am getting a bit frustrated.

you could try ogle it is by far the best dvd player in linux. Supports menus even.

I did add a mount point of /mnt/dvd, and even did a fresh reinstall of FC1 (her previous install was an upgrade on top of RH9). She does have a WinXP partition on her computer and the device works fine there.

I will have her install ogle to see if she has better luck with that, but she does already have an IDE DVD drive that works fine under FC1 with mplayer. I would hate to have to tell her that she needs to boot to WinXP to use this thing I bought her for Christmas

Well, that hasn't yielded anything useful unfortunately.

Try ogle like shuiend suggested, or perhaps xine which is technically superior.

This error is interesting. I have never seen it but I did find reference to it on a google search. Could it be causing your problem? Try doing this as root before running mplayer:

I have no idea if the above is at all related to your problem, but if that fixes it you'll want to make it permanent by adding this line to your /etc/sysctl.conf:

No joy I still get the same error message after trying Void's suggestion. I'm going to give a try at downloading and installing ogle and see if that works.

I already bought a PCI USB2 card for the computer after I found out that it needed that but as much as I hate to do this; .... I may jusst have to tell her to boot to the Evil OS to burn DVD's

Darn, but that really hurts.....

Thanks again for all your help/suggestions. Must be that Mr. Gates bought the hardware manufacturers off again.

Yes, I had her try it both as a regular user and as root. This is getting really weird. She can mount the drive... she was even using the Gimp to edit photographs that she was reading from that drive. Also, both ogle and mplayer will play DVD's from her IDE DVD drive. The main reason I got this drive for her was so that she could burn her own DVD's. Well, actually, it was also a bit of an experiment to try using usb devices under Linux for myself. If it had worked out well, I was planning on adding one of them to my Linux computer someday. The local LUG is going to be putting on a special meeting for the students at the college where I work and I want to be able to show any interested students that you can do anything with Linux that you can with Windows. I guess that we may not be demonstrating burning DVD's.

And, as I said in my last post, the device must be fine since it does work fine with WinXP on the same computer.

I get that error and ignore it, it isn't a problem i think.
