on previous version of redhat during install you could select a text login and it would not load X until you ran startx .. wtih FC1 i haven't been able to find out how to get it to login this way. Is there a way for to fedora boot up just to terminal and i can start X when i want instead of booting into it?

Yes, the same way as you would on all previous versions. Change the "initdefault" from 5 to 3 in /etc/inittab.
