It's funny you should say that because I'm a big baseball fan and the local announcer always says he "dived for the ball" and it just doesn't sound right to me. I actually get angry every time I hear him say it. I yell at the TV "he DOVE for the ball you idiot". :)

i don't think either sounds right to be honest, not sure which is correct though.

We don't like to follow the rules here.
