For me, the biggest con of Gentoo is that you have to have a broadband connection to install it - unless you're very patient. That's why I prefer LRs-Linux, which installs Linux From Scratch (plus extras) direct from a CD.

broadband is a biggy

one thing I really like about it is that I can bring all the software on my system overnight my just typing:
#emerge rsync
and
#emerge -up world
before I go to bed

the portage system makes it easy to install/upgrade/remove software


a downside is that you have to wait a while for the compiles to finish (although you get optimization which is a big plus)
this can really be noticed on on things like kde (which I HATE)
