has anyone tried updating to these 2 in suse 9.1 pro or any other distro if so what method did you use? apt or something else? what results or problems did you have?

I don't use Suse 9.1 yet but here at the ofice I plan to move from Fedora Core 2 to Suse 9.1 in a very near future.
To answer your question I upgraded my FC2 from KDE 3.2 to version 3.3, and I had no problems whatsoever.
apt-get did it for me actually and thanks to the nice folks of kde-redhat I only had to update my sources.list to include the testing repositories (it has since moved to "stable") and type apt-get dist-upgrade.
