First of all, Merry Xmas & happy New Year !!!


OK, let's go staight to the point, here's my environment detail :

OS : Linux Debian Sarge
Kernel : 2.6.9 (no smp)
Sources : Installed (seems to be the good ones)
Kernel headers : Installed (idem ditto)
Gfx driver : nvidia 1.0-6629 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... -6629.html)
Gfx Card : MSI nVidia 6600GT 128MB AGP (Chipset ID : 0x00f1)

Well, I moved from FC1 to FC2 and then upgraded to FC3. The huge mess I got (and some friend's push) made up my mind to switch to Debian Sarge (testing). :twisted:

Since I headed in this direction I also bought that nVidia gfx card coz' as one says "nVidia is more Linux minded than ATI and their stuff are more supported".

I then installed the very latest NVIDIA*.run which is to be found on their download website part, and launched.

Everything has been compiled (when needed) by this appz.

XF86Config-4 has been updated manually following the clear how-to provided by nVidia
nvidia is specified in modules.conf

So far so good.

The bad point is that I always got this message :
(EE) : Deviced not detected
:shock:

Conclusion : no gfx interface, only the "DOS-like" screen to login ...

Errr, needless to say I've googled hundreds op webpages and still sitting in the same ennoying situation.

Many things have been tried so far ... none of them brought me the light.

...Each Linux guy on earth knows that such desperate things can easily be solved by Void Main himself, but before bothering you I really deeply searched very hard a solution by myself.

I am still away from home (and all my stuff) so I can't really do a lot of helping at the moment. I've also been down with the flu for the last couple of days. I guess what I am saying is, it might be a couple of days before I can try and help, hopefully you'll get it sorted out before then.

Ok, could you post a copy of your XF86Config along with the output of an "lspci -vv" and a copy of your X error log? I can't promise anything but I might see something obvious.

I didn't stay up for the stroke of midnight last night because I was planning on going out dirt bike riding with my son today (our annual New Years Day ride). The weather was unseasonably warm here but I still wasn't quite up to that much activity. Oh well, my Son wanted me to install Doom 3 for him only to find out my GeForce MX 4000 is a piece of crap and is way too slow for Doom 3. We just got back from the stores looking for a GeForce FX5900XT but none were to be found. I guess I'll have to order one online.

Back on topic, the error log should be under /var/log and probably named XFree86.0.log for the most recent one. It should list all the warnings and errors. Also, did you have your nvidia kernel module loaded?

Do your nvidia device files exist and have sufficient permissions?

Quite nice for me to imagine how it could feel to get out do some biking with a son. Since I don't have any child (yet) and living in Brussels city ... naaah, just don't think about it, too dangerous environment here to enjoy a good bike.

I believe that log is from a successful startup using the open source drivers right? I need a log from an attempted startup that fails using the nVidia proprietary drivers. Also I added a couple of things to my last post about the kernel driver and the /dev/nvid* device file permissions.

Did you happen to look at my last message about the nvidia kernel module and the /dev/nvid* device file permissions? If those look good I think I have enough info to do some research. The first thing I notice is that the card is unknown on your lspci but I don't think that is causing your problem. I'm just wondering if the card is supported by the driver. Heading over to the nVidia web site and forum now to see if there are any nuggets.

Well, I've searched for "nvidia kernel module and the /dev/nvid* device" and found something telling to do "cp -a /dev/nvi* /etc/udev/devices" or something like that. Did it right now : no changes.

I've scanned the nvidia forum for days now : hundreds of messages read ... most of them frustrating when you read that so many guys ARE using a GeForce 6600GT with THAT driver. :lol: I prefer to laugh, more stress would hav made me crying.

Can you be more explicit when talking about : "nvidia kernel module and the /dev/nvid* device file permissions" ?
It seems it'll be the very real thing I'll have to work out.

Yes, a few posts above I wanted you to do this:

# /sbin/lsmod | grep nvidia

and

# ls -l /dev/nvid*

The first line should give you one line of output continaining the word "nvidia" plus some numbers. If it does not then your nvidia kernel module is not loaded which it needs to be in order to work. You also need the device files and your user has to have read/write permissions to them which the second command should reveal. I agree after looking at the nVidia forms that others are using it with the particular nVidia driver realease. I doubt any of them in the threads I Have found are using the same kernel version or version of XFree86 as you. I think you should be good on both of those though.

"nvidia 3470108 0"

This is what you expected I guess.


And "# ls -l /dev/nvid*" gives :
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 0 2005-01-02 04:59 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 2005-01-02 04:59 /dev/nvidiactl

...by the way, those 2 "new" files are only there since I used your "cp -a /dev/nvi* /etc/udev/devices"

I also tried to compile (+ edit XF86Config etc. etc. etc.) under kernel 2.6.7 2.6.8 2.6.9

I fell asleep too, sorry. :) Ok, if you are trying to start X from the command line as a normal user then those device files would not have sufficient permissions. Try doing a "chmod a+rw /dev/nvid*" then try starting X.

EDIT: I might just be buying one of those cards myself... so I can better help you out (that's the excuse I am using). :) See:

Your brain actually needs more sleep than mine due to the high usage you're doing of it !

Well, let's be honest, I ALWAYS have to find new excuses to get new IT stuff at home as well. I guess wives are the same all over the world ... far from our technical visions. :wink:

I've done the chmod right now and 'll try to restart X right away just after having changed XF86Config to "nvidia" instead of "VESA".

I'll let you know !

Well ... that didn't make it either. :cry:

Never mind, I'll have to get used to it. VESA works at least, that's already something. :)

I'll just google a bit to find the addresses of the best IT exorcists I can get.
