Fresh install Ubuntu - No GUI or network

Post by dickinsd » Tue Feb 01, 2005 12:01 pm

Hi,

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a machine at my home.
The install appeared to have worked through OK with no problems, other than a message about eth0

Something along the lines of eth0 has not been correctly setup, would you like to setup eth0 manually or wait for ubuntu to reboot.

I chose to wait till ubuntu reboots.

when ubuntu had finished installing, and then setting everything up, I was presented with a login prompt, which flickered off and then back on and off and on again, this time there was a message that the xserer can not start.

I have since tried the following
lspci tells me I have the following card
nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] rev b2
PCI:0:1:0

The first thing that jumps out there is that it is actually an AGP card, not sure if that is a problem?
I tried:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l |grep xserver
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and added the information specific to my card

I am unable to post the following
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
As I have no network, and no FDD (Wish I had purchased one now) so no way to get the logs from my system.

I will post what I think may be the interesting parts...

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Device:
nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] rev b2
nv
PCI:0:1:0
use FBDEV

Code: Select all

 /var/log/XFree86.0.log
(II) Primary device: PCI:01:00:0
(WW) NV: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found
(EE) No devices detected
(Taken from the very end of the log file, there are no other Warnings or Errors throughout the log file)

Can you help with that info, or are you unable to proceed without a complete /var/log/XFree86.0.log listing?

Thanks

Dave

Doesn't Debian (and therefore Ubuntu) use x.org not xfree86?

Do you have a shipped 4.10 cd, or have you downloaded a current snapshot can you do that with ubuntu?

Can you log in in text mode okay?

Have you tried an apt-get dist-upgrade on your system. The 4.10 release is coming to its end.

Is the card relatively new. If so this HOWTO might help. I know very little about editing video card configs but this might help you.

don't know about x.org, this is new stuff to me, I am still trying to find my feet with Fedora, had another machine, so thought I would have a blast at an install of ubuntu.

The Cd is a shipped one, and the odd thing (to me anyway) is that the live CD works fine on this machine, I was running from the other machine for about 90 minutes last night with the live CD.

I can login in text mode, but I don't really know any commands to do or change anything, the only commend I really want to use is the startx command, but its not having any of it. :(

I would love to try the apt-get but my network card is also not working, perhaps if you can tell me the command to get to a network config or something in text mode, I may be able to try the apt-get command

As for the age of the card, it got to be about 3-5 years old, but works fine (using Live CD's or Windows), but I will check out the link anyway.

thank you

Dave

Hello,

I think that thread is for cards considerably newer than mine, I have 'clicked' on to a way for me to post my log file etc, as I think I said, the Ubuntu Live CD works a treat on my system, just have to set the network card up, and I ready to go.
As such I have got READ ONLY access to my HDD, here are the files, that may help someone with more knowledge of Ubuntu to help me ;)

So heres the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Code: Select all

# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

OK

Think I got it Now, took info from the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 from the Live CD

When the CD is booting, it creates a File System, I looked at the XF86Config-4, wrote down the differences in the device section, rebooted, logged in (in text mode)

Code: Select all

sudo emacs /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
and changed the following parts

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] rev b2"
Driver "nv"
BusID "PCI:0:1:0"
VideoRam 64000
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 750 SB"
HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 50-160
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] rev b2"
Monitor "Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 750 SB"
DefaultDepth 24
to

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
Identifier "nv"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 750 SB"
HorizSync 30-96
VertRefresh 50-160
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "nv"
Monitor "Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 750 SB"
DefaultDepth 16
[/color]

So not sure if this is OK, or if I am causing my self more probs, but I can now

Code: Select all

startx
And get a GUI. (yay)

Once I got into the Gui I was able to set my Network card up, and I am visiting this site on my NOW WORKING Ubuntu install.

So now for some customising and got to fix my mouse?? (look out for more questions from me

Good job Dave! I started to reply from work but I hate doing that when I can't really look into it until I get home and have more time. I was hoping you were able to get it. What's the problem with your mouse? How do you like Ubuntu so far (other than the few problems you had with the install)? I thought it was a nicely done distro. I like Debian as much as any distro.

I like it so far, once I could get into the GUI I was able to configure my network connection (ethernet) and all seems to be fine.

The mouse problem is actually unrelated to Ubuntu I think.

Everytime I restart the computer, my mouse does not seem to work, I have to disconnect it and reconnect, it the starts to work, but VERY slow.
I tried going to desktop setting and increasing the speed of the mouse this had no effect.

So I tried a different mouse directly into the the USB connection of the computer and it works perfectly.

I use a KVm to switch between my Windows machine and my newly built linux machine, I think wither Ubuntu doesn't like the KVM, or my mouse doesn't like the KVM.

So now I have one KB, one monitor and 2 mice on my desk :D

I am knackered now (been writing a little article on the install and video card fun for my little website) I will try to do something a little more daring to it tomorrow. (later today ...)

I did install Debian once before, it wasn't planned, I tried Knoppix, thought it was amazing (and it worked with my wireless card) so decided to install it, but ended up with debian, which no longer worked with my wireless card. I tried using apt-get update, and apt-get install, and I don't know what I did but all of the packages on the applications menu vanished, I rebooted and they where still gone, I had no idea of how I should go about repairing whatever it was I did, so I just installed FC2 over it, and have been pretty much FC since.
Honestly have no idea what I did Anyway, in the past now, looking forward to some Ubuntu learning!

Thanks

Dave
