Not Much Mandrake Discussion...

Postby Calum » Sun May 14, 2006 3:13 pm

Well, not much being said about mandrake these days, is there? and i was just thinking that when i get the chance to do a proper overhaul of the computer (now i no longer need windows 98 for the university) i might replace the increasingly odd FC4 (i suspect my apt repositories are to blame) with whatever mandrake's calling itself these days. unless slackware has grown a decent package management system since i last looked (which is quite possible)...

I know a few people new that are using the distribution formerly known as Mandrake. It was odd actually... i go back to my old haunts from highschool and everyone is suddenly using Linux.

If your lookin to try somethin else, perhaps Debian is worth a shot. I've got it alongside FC5 on my laptop, and i just installed it on my server. It's working out pretty good so far. The debian apt is freaking amazing. It is soo much better than yum or apt for rpm. Could be that theres more packages available, or the post-install configuration scripts that make the apps do what you want when they install are awesome.

yes, i never really got into debian. too big for me, and what an awkward install process! weird.

i have tried several debian based linuces but i always try to mix the repositories and stuff something up! also, i have a soft spot for mandrake in a way and i would like to find out if it has finally got over its issues (although i suspect a couple of my pet mandrake irritations will still be there, perhaps that's just the pessimist in me)
