Slackware 12 out now

Guess I must have been kinda busy lately, how could I miss this?

Slackware 12 was released on July 2, and it looks awesome.
* kernel 2.6.21.5 (first default 2.6 kernel in distro history)
* gcc 4.1.2 (first gcc4 in distro history)

Normally, Slackware stays kinda behind the curve, delivering trusted but somewhat dated packages. Looks like this is changing:
* kde 3.5.7
* apache 2.2.4
* php 5.2.3

DVD images are available, but it would take years to download such a beast, so I'm going the cd route. With source, that's 6 discs. Well, you really only need the first 2 to get the installation going.

I'm going to be taking install and configure notes, in case anybody is interested.

i really like fedora, but i kind of want to go back to slack, but i haven't got time for all the fiddly trying-to-make-it-work business i used to have to go through. Can you post some notes or a review? do you know anywhere else this sort of thing might be found? not just the usual review like "this isn't going to challenge ubuntu's top spot" sort of rubbish, but something that'll actually give me an idea how hard it's going to be to (say) set up my damn samsung ml-1210 printer (which was why i ditched slack last time for fedora) and so on.

I finished my initial install last night, and made full notes of my choices for each step. I used the "menu" package choosing command, and listed exactly what packages I installed. The package menu has changed considerably since the last version - some packages are in different locations, some packages that were optional before are now required, and some packages that were required before are now options. And some of the packages have been exploded to allow more control over installation - for example, 75dpi fonts and 100dpi fonts are in separate packages. This also applies to X, making selection of packages from the X group kinda nightmarish. Also, note that I did not install php or mysql - I am planning to install both by hand, simply cuz I want to.

One thing I am already impressed with is that the hplip package is included - these are the Linux drivers for HP all-in-one printers. I purchased an HP OfficeJet 6310 specifically because it was supported by this driver set, and I am pleased to see that it is already included.

I'll have more configuration files and notes later, but I am going overseas for a couple months, and won't be doing much configuration until afterwards. My Linux laptop is too nice to take on the boat...
