Another slackware networking problem

Well after i found out i cannto run wire to my room i decided i am now hell bent on getting wireless working in slackware. I a stuck in windows 2k untell i do so i need to get my ass workin on it. I am using a DLink DWL-520 wireless card. I am presently using the wireless drivers from linux-wlan.com.
When I boot itseems to load the drivers then it starts laoding orinoco.c drivers. My dmesg is as following.

seems to say that the drivers are loaded. Now i am wondering why it is trying to load the orinoco.c driver. I never set it up to load that driver. I cannot find in any scripts where it calls that. I am trying to set up the wireless card for DHCP. Setting all the ip and broadcast correctly does not allow me to get on the network so i must do DHCP. Any help would be appreacted. I can also post the outputs of other scripts if ou need me to. Just tell me what you need to know.

So let me get this straight. Your network appears to be working if you use get a DHCP assigned address? If so then the drivers are loaded properly. If you don't get any errors I would leave it alone. It sounds like you want to set a static IP address but can not get that working, do I have it straight so far? If you can get DHCP to work then you should also be able to set up a static address and have it work with no problem. If I have it right then I need to know a little more about your network. I would be curious why you need to set it static though.

No DHCP is not working. It will not recieve and ip address from the router with the wireless card. I beileve that it is the orinco driver trying to load that is screwing up.

I'm really out of my element when it comes to wireless or Slackware, not to mention putting them both together. There are a few people on here that use Slack but I don't believe they are running wireless. I would suggest asking on a busier forum like linuxquestions.org or the forums at linuxiso.org, etc. Does the wlan project have a mailing list? I wish I had a wireless card and AP to test. I want the 802.11g but all the vendors are Windows Nazis it seems.

I am positive that it is a 520. I have used it in Red Hat and Suse with no problems with these drivers. Red Hat i just installed the RPMS and bam it worked. In Suse it got configured in yast for using the drivers in work. Its just i dont care for either of those 2 very much. I find slackware to be a lot more usefull for me. And i think it looks better 2.

More useful? How? Looks better? How? Anything you can run on Slack you can run on Red Hat and vice versa. It seems you are having more trouble getting your wireless card working on it.

Now just to fix x with new nvidia drivers. could any one tell me the actual memory size of 64meg in vytes. X86config is sayin my card only has 4megs of memory and i know thats way off.

Also voidmain it is rweally just i personall prefrence of mine that i like slackware over redhat. idk it just seems slackware runs quicker and smoother on my machine then red hat ever did. I am also starting to actually piece together how everything works in a linux machine and slackware is helpin alot more with that. I am starting to enjoy manually editing files and what not to get stuff workin. I did love the apt-get support of RH though. that is something that i really miss now.

That's cool. I didn't mean for it to sound like it was bad to prefer Slack over Red Hat, I just thought you preferred it for all the wrong reasons. That's good that you are learning more about Linux in the process, much better reasons for preferring Slackware IMHO. I actually used Slackware for a while (before there was a Red Hat). I also like Debian, you might try that in your travels (creator of apt-get/synaptic).

yah i just got X11 wokrin. Stupid me spelling stuff wrong. I plan on trying debian some time in the future but right now i am wokrin on settin up slackware as my gaming rig. So far it is going good. Just got to get a couple more games installed and i should be all set with it.

HOW DID YOU GET IT WORKING??????????

i want to buy a D-Link wireless card and use DHCP on my red hat 9.0 box (and also on my slack 9.0 (soon to be 9.1) one) but on the advice of refalm i thought it would be too much hassle and thought i might as well get a 50 foot cable and run it down the stairs. needless to say i'd prefer to get a D-Link wireless card and get it to work. the reason is that we have a D-Link gateway/hub and i know nothing about networking. in fact i already asked this here...

Ok Calum sorry i havent responded sooner but i have been busy. I have a D-Link 520. I got it about a year in a half ago. You need to make sure you get the non plus and that it is a prism2 chip set. You motherboard also has to be pci 2.2 complient for this card or so it says. I really cant comment on that since it has worked in all my comps just fine. I dont know if they are pci 2.2 or not though.
First off once you get the card goto linux-wlan.com and pick up the latest drivers form there. If you are running red hat there is a site in their faq that has rpms that work wonderfully. I would suggest those if possible. If you are in slack i have gotten the driver to work in 9 and 9.1 the exactly the same way. you need to configure and compile and install the drivers first. Also in slackware check and see if you have orinco_pci loaded with lsmod. If you do you need to remove that module. I am not exactly sure on that name though. After that in the read me there is a section about pci cards. It more or less says the following

modprobe prism2_pci
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=linksys authtype=opensystem

you need to change where it says ssid to whatever ur ssid is. Then all you need to do is
dhcpcd wlan0. Also in the modules.conf file add this line.
alias wlan0 prism2_pci
