remembering directories

I use gnome programs like ggv and gedit all the time. Whenever I try to open a new file, it starts me searching from the home directory. Is there anyway to get them to remember the last directory I looked in? It's annoying to have to travel 4 levels to get the file I want every time. Even when I have a file from that directory open!
