Laptop Video Card doesn't seem supported in xorg :(

Post by X11 »

I am getting quickly sick of Windows XP Home on my new laptop, its fscking disgusting and I run gaim, firefox, openoffice, cygwin, vmware, gimp, and a few Windows only things that dont matter like WindowsBlinds and stuff that isnt even fscking needed on a decent operating system.

I think it can run alright in framebuffer mode but the biggest problem I had with trying Linux on it was the widescreen (1280x800) video mode, and for some reason xorg on slackware 10 just did not want to cooperate.

I am considering getting Fedora Core 3 and burning it to DVD but I will not if I am stuck in a shitty resolution with a retarded looking aspect ratio.

Video Card is this one here...

Wow, that even scared Google. Surely, you have more information about your display device than comes up in Windows System whatever? I bet by checking the name of the driver, you could find more info with Google. Hopefully, this isn't some kind of onboard display adapter, which only Windows has the directions to find.

As far as I know its pretty modern and a driver may not have been written, but it does work in framebuffer.

Only xorg on slackware 10 refuses to work with the 1280x800 mode.

But if it works in Windows, then Windows has a driver for it, and examining the windriver can give you a lot of info. That's what I meant. You're pretty much stuck until you figure out the name of your display adapter.

What really matters is what lspci says:

# /sbin/lspci -vvv

Do that from Linux (KNOPPIX if you have to).

Posting from Knoppix livecd on my laptop (X works fine as I said, it uses framebuffer and works goddamn fine, I just want to know how I can get it to support 1280x800). I have this much interest in games: 0 and this much interest in 3D acceleration: 0.

As I expected the information here is just as ambiguous as the information in the Windows Hardware config.

It is ammusing that this booted of my slow lappy cdrom faster then Windows XP Home boots from the harddisk.

I just found the following...

http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

which gave me the following from my little query

Modeline "1280x720@60" 73.78 1280 1312 1592 1624 720 735 742 757

Its not 16/9 so then I got this...

Modeline "1280x800@70" 101.92 1280 1312 1696 1728 800 816 825 841

While we're on the subject, would anyone like to explain what those modeline numbers mean?

It doesn't seem all that long ago that we had to do some calculations and come up with our own modelines manually. Wow things have come along. :)

Well neither of them worked, I hope this is solved quickly because a lot of people are getting widescreen laptops.

Looks like it should work to me:

Here's the author of the driver's site:

Okay, my previous posts were in total jibberish or people have managed to forget how to read.

THE DRIVER WORKS fscking FINE IN FRAMEBUFFER MODE! HOWEVER IT GIVES ME A SHITTY 1024x768 DISPLAY MODE. I WANT TO GET IT TO RUN IN 1280x800 WHICH IS WHAT THE DISPLAY WAS DESIGNED FOR!

DER TREIBER BEARBEITET fscking GELDSTRAFE IM FRAMEBUFFER-MODUS! JEDOCH GIBT ER MIR Einen ANZEIGEMODUS SHITTY 1024x768. FÜR Ich MÖCHTE IHN ERHALTEN, UM IN 1280x800 ZU LAUFEN, DAS IST, WAS Die ANZEIGE BESTIMMT WAR!

¡cEl CONDUCTOR TRABAJA LA MULTA DE MIERDA EN MODO DE FRAMEBUFFER! SIN EMBARGO ME DA Un MODO De EXHIBICIÓN De SHITTY 1024x768. ¡cDeseo CONSEGUIRLO PARA FUNCIONAR EN 1280x800 QUE SEA PARA LO QUE FUE DISEÑADA La EXHIBICIÓN!

LE CONDUCTEUR FONCTIONNE L'CAmende FOUTUE EN MODE DE FRAMEBUFFER! CEPENDANT IL ME DONNE Un MODE D'cAffichage De SHITTY 1024x768. Je VEUX L'OBTENIR POUR FONCTIONNER DANS 1280x800 EST QUI POUR CE QUE L'cAffichage A ÉTÉ CONÇU!

IL DRIVER FUNZIONA L'CIndennità fscking NEL MODO DI FRAMEBUFFER! TUTTAVIA Mi DÀ Un MODO Di ESPOSIZIONE Di SHITTY 1024x768. DESIDERO CONVINCERLO PER FUNZIONARE In 1280x800 CHE È CHE COSA L'cEsposizione È STATA PROGETTATA PER!

O EXCITADOR TRABALHA MULTA DO CARALHO NA MODALIDADE DE FRAMEBUFFER! ENTRETANTO DÁ-me Uma MODALIDADE De EXPOSIÇÃO De SHITTY 1024x768. Eu QUERO COMEÇÁ-lo FUNCIONAR Em 1280x800 QUE É O QUE A EXPOSIÇÃO FOI PROJETADA PARA!

Is my question at all clearer, or should I stop dreaming of this working and shut up.

There was nothing about the mode 1280x800 on the links you gave me.

I guess its a lost cause and im forced to run windows bull hockey

I remember seeing a thread over at fedoraforum titled 1200x800 that I never read. You might want to look over there as I had never heard of this resolution before so maybe it's the same laptop. I don't know if there was a resolution or not because I didn't read the thread as I said. I'm not going to read the thread either because I no longer go there so you'll have to do it yourself.

Also, maybe you could put a copy of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file on your server and post a link to it so we can see what your card is actually advertising and what modes it's capable of, and we wouldn't have to try and figure out your jiberish. :)
