audacity

I just installed audacity on slackware, with all the requirements and such i think. But when i start it i get:

There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer.
You will not be able to play or record audio.

Error: Host error.

I tried running $ aoss audacity
and it didnt give methat error, but gave me this when i tried to record

Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.

and on the command line it says:

PaHost_OpenStream: could not open /dev/dsp for O_RDONLY
PaHost_OpenStream: ERROR - result = -10000

The permissions on /dev/dsp0 is 666 and /dev/dsp does link to /dev/dsp0.
Artsd is not running, and no other sound programs are either.

Any ideas what im missing to get audacity working?

That sure as heck isn't 666 - quite possibly you have a permissions error. Audacity is working fine for me with the above permissions.

So it shouldnt be a permissions problem, mine are less restrictive than your permissions

Sometimes the level of the permissions is not what counts, it's the exactness of the permissions. Your error message "could not open /dev/dsp for O_RDONLY" is what led me to wonder about your permissions. Perhaps it needs to have more restrictive access in order to work.

Doesn't look like a permissions problem. I've seen a lot of the same errors on Google and what I am seeing is people fix it by running "alsaconfig". Apparently Audacity relies on OSS and in today's ALSA distros the OSS layer can be supported through ALSA. Example:

Can you can *any* sound app working (xmms)? If not it definitely looks like a driver issue.

Oh yea all the other sounds apps make music fine.
