Does anyone know of a way (using open source packages preferably) to set up a machine with a TV card in it as a stream server. The goal is to be able to watch a live TV broadcast via this server to a client. Something much like this but for Linux:

Actually we got it working right at the start of the game. :) The secret was MythStreamTV module for MythTV:

VLC does video streaming quiet well. It will also stream in IPv6 as well as IPv4. This is what I have always used to stream video.

Yes but can you stream live TV with it over the internet? I have used it for streaming DVDs and images but not for live TV.

Live TV is going to be a thing of the past, eventually. The old "throw 10,000 shows at each and every client, and let them choose what to watch" model is stupid and wasteful and truly satisfies no one. Video on demand from a subscription service is a better idea. Right now, nobody wants to be the first to step forward, so they all hesitate. They have the money and no vision, I have the vision and no money. But eventually, Live TV will be in museums next to PacMan.

Heh heh, except when it comes to ball games like what I needed it for when starting this thread. I could have waited and watched the replay when I got home but the point was so I could watch it live. I don't like watching replays of sporting events. Usually you get a spoiler before you get a chance to see it.

I think sporting events can be properly handled by my tv network. The streaming feed will be available, all you have to do is ask for it. And if you really want to, you could set it up so you miss the biggest play of the game while you are in the bathroom...

Good question. I have never used it for streaming live TV either. of course a capture card would be required and the software would have to be able to accept a video source straight from the capture card. It could be done but the question is has it been done.

Interesting, it looks like it can accept a stream from a capture card as an input for streaming.
