gaim error

After upgrading every package on my slackware system (i dled all the current packages and then did as instaucted by "upgrade.txt" on the ftp server) i now get an error when starting gaim. I dled the newest gaim nightly and i get the same error. the error is:

No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

I installed the latest fonconfig, read the man page, and looked at fonts.conf but i am still very confused! Any help here?

It used to do this to me when running the Gaim alpha. When you load it through a console window, does it give you a bunch of lines looking like this:

No font found! Arial 14 pt!

Or something along those lines?
