Input/output error

Postby Calum » Fri Oct 03, 2003 3:50 pm

i am trying to copy abig file (420 MB or so) off of one of myCDs onto the hard drive. It is a movie file (an avi) and as far asi can tell it plays fine in mplayer, but when i try to use cp or cat to copy it, i always get this error at the samepoint (after about 280MB):
Input/output error

I tried in konqueror and xfm too, with the same result. i also tried to make a disk image (so i could mount it from the hard drive and copy the file out) using dd, and also the same thing using xcdroast, but with the same error.

There are one or two visible scratches on the CD, and i don't doubt it's correct that it's an i/o error at that point, but is there some way i can (possibly using mplayer or cdparanoia?) get the whole file to copy (so far i can only get the first 60% or so) perhaps dropping some frames or whatever it needs to do to get the best copy possible?

what do you recommend? thanks as always in advance...

You should be able to do something like:

Code: Select all
mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy /mnt/cdrom/mymovie.avi -o /somewhere/else/mymovie.avi

It's strange that MPlayer doesn't crash like everything else does when hitting that spot though...
