named problems

Postby X11 » Tue Feb 18, 2003 4:55 am

VoidMain, I followed your details on stting up a DNS server, and could not get it to work. Last time it was fine but I sold that server.

This is the error i get...
Code: Select all
[root@tazor etc]# service named restart
Stopping named: rndc: connect failed: connection refused
                                                           [FAILED]
Starting named:                                            [FAILED]

I played around with the rndc files with no sucsess. What should I do?

Did you use my example setup? The keys in the /etc/rndc.conf and /etc/rndc.key need to match and the key names need to match between those two files and the line in your /etc/named.conf that reads like this:

Code: Select all
controls {
        inet 127.0.0.1 allow { localhost; } keys { rndckey; };
};

I have no clue either, especially since I have no clue as to what you are referring to that is not working or what steps you took to determine why it is not working. I am known to be clairvoyant by some and have some level of extrasensory perception but I'm drawing a blank on this one.

Ok, so the problem you are having has not to do with how it runs but whether or not it will actually start. Is that correct? If so have you looked at the end of your /var/log/messages after a failed attempt at starting it, and/or are there any other error messages? If so, what/where are the errors?

What are the permissions on your /etc/named.conf file? Make sure user "named" can read it, same goes for the directory your zone files are in and all the zone files. User "named" will need write access to the zone files if you are running a dynamic DNS server. Also make sure you aren't blocking port 53 with iptables etc...
