Anyone get Tomcat running?

I've followed all of the instructions at this page http://www.luminas.co.uk/technology/servlet/tomcat.html, but I have been throwing gutterballs all night. I want to get this thing up and running so I can give JSP a shot, but I keep getting a 500 error. Is there a log file that I could post tht would help make any light of what my server is doing?
