Hi.

Now - please don't shoot

I still have a lot of clients on m$ - not the point...... but....
The only product in the m$ stable that I still use a lot
is access.
I've google'd all over, in the past year or so, and tried a few
of the products available.
Has anyone used a similiar front-end or know of something
similiar under Linux?
A nice product I use as well is "TOAD" - but I need something more
"generic".
The really big problem is getting ODBC drivers and connections
easily going to other databases.

PS. I bought and installed crossover from codeweavers and got access
going under it. But that is not really the solution! Having to use
any m$ product irks me a hell of a lot.

You want graphical front ends for Linux to connect to M$ databases? If so I can't help you but if you want graphical front ends to connect to databases that run on Linux there are a lot. If you just want administration front ends you have mysqlcc, mysql-admin, phpMyAdmin, webmin, etc. For PostgreSQL there is a graphical tcl app called "pgaccess" that gives you a similar gui to the access GUI. You can also use Webmin or a few other web based admin utils. Of course Commercial databases have their own very good front ends. Oh, and don't forget OpenOffice.org which has functionality similar to Access if you hook it up to MySQL:

The above is very much like using Access but has the advantage of being in a real database that can be accessed from many things (PHP, Perl, etc). I use MySQL and PostgreSQL extensively, however mostly for web based databases in which I use VIM to code. I might use mysqlcc to create tables and users graphically or sometimes I just create a SQL file and do it on the command line, or right in the mysql or psql command interpereter. I can't stand Access because you can only access the data from Access. In a real SQL database you can hit it from anywhere. I also access my databases from either Windows or Linux via Perl. You can also access a PostgreSQL database via ODBC and use Access as your frontend if you want (PostgreSQL database running on Linux and Access on your Win box). I don't use Win so I don't use Access, but have done the above in the past.

Yep - I'll try some of those....
and no I do not want to connect to m$ databases...
Want something like access on Linux for Linux.

It is not so much the GUI (but that helps) but the way of creating
quick tests for different queries and views re. timing, data retrieval etc.
on different databases using ODBC etc. And an easy way to setup and
test complex inner/outer joins and multi select statements.

Been downloading and testing for a while - and yes pgaccess
is a nice product, tried it a few months ago.

Well - back to downloading and testing some more...
but first - of to bed - 05h00 here where I stay.

If it's Linux->Linux and you are doing all this testing then I assume it's for an app that you might be writing? If so, why use ODBC? I would use native client libraries which I would think would kick the snot out of ODBC in performance.
