Aha, I figured out where the problem is. I think I'm going to need a kernel, initrd and modules that were compiled under calyptos. I suspected some basic shared libraries were not compatible between the Fedora and calyptos (ld-linux, libc, etc) so I copied the /lib from Fedora over to calyptos and it loaded init and then complained about various other missing libraries. So again, I am pretty sure I can make it work if I get a calyptos kernel/etc compiled for the K6-2 (not having Calyptos up, I can't compile one myself, at least not without a LOT more work than what I'm willing to give it.

P.S. Stryker, if you do feel froggy enough to compile another kernel and create another intird, could you also either compile in ext2 and ext3 support or put the modules on the initrd? Thanks!

i think i had ext2 and ext3 support compiled in, that's how i got to my /boot partition (which i should probably change to reiserfs too just to be consistent). I uploaded a kernel compiled for a 386 instead of a pentium 4, it should work but i dont have an older machine to test it with. i also included the initrd file but it didn't appear that any changes were necessary to it. I also compiled all the kernel modules for a 386, they're in the lib folder. Although I suspect there may be problems when booting still cuz most of the software was compiled for a pentium 4. I'm crossing my fingers. I may go back and compile everything for a 586 or something for more compatibility, but i wanted it to run really nice for everyone else. Anyways, enough of my ramblings. it's at http://calyptos.com/kernelstuff.tar.bz2

Sorry, it's a no go. It doesn't want to even think about booting that kernel either. The screen just goes blank for a few seconds and then reboots. The GRUB entries are right, it just doesn't like those kernels for some reason. I even dd'ed it to floppy and tried to boot it directly, same results. Strange...

do you have any idea what it could be besides pam? i thought there could be a version mismatch that wasn't caught when it compiled or something. i'll check the dependencies for this version of usermode and see what i got installed. If that fails I have no idea, i think i'm slowly losing my sanity.

Can you post your pam configuration?

EDIT: Never mind, I have it! :)

Just curious, have you tried and been successful at usermode'ing a new program in Fedora just to make sure you understand how it's done?
