hi dudes, now. i bought a new hard drive to use as an additional one in harvey (his existing one is 15 gigs and constantly full) BUT it arrived and it's got a 68 pin scsi interface. well, never mind it was dirt cheap so no worries, BUT how do i plug the bugger in? i have a spare space on the IDE cable (that is what it is, yes?) that goes to the normal hard drive, and i also have a couple of spare PCI slots (and one spare ISA slot too come to that), what (before i buy any more not-quite-fit for purpose kit) do i need to get this thing to work. and as an aside, presumably this scsi device will not be /dev/hdb once installed, any idea what it will show up as in fedora?

you will need a scsi controller to go in one of your pci slots. i would suggest looking at www.adaptec.com to choose the right model of controller. the device when properly connected should show up as sda.

it looks like i stick it on the scsi 68 pin socket and then plug the normal hard drive cable into it, is this OK?
the hard drive is a 68 pin LDV scsi one.

no thoughts? sorry to bump, but i kind of would like to know if this sort of thing is ok for what i am trying to do or if i will just be buying another white elephant...

I've never heard of being able to mix IDE and SCSI in either direction but there may be some new technology I don't know about which is why I've been reserving comment. I haven't been keeping up on hardware. There are several different SCSI technologies each using a different connector but some SCSI controllers are backwards compatible so there are adapters to allow you to plug SCSI drives with one type of connector into a SCSI controller of another type that supports both. But never have I heard of an IDE controller that could run a SCSI drive. They are completely different technologies. Now I will reserve any more comment until anyone who might know differently comes along. :)

there is no way to run a scsi drive off an IDE controller .. if you can give me the make and model of the hdd in question i will be glad to help you figure out what controller you need.

ok dudes, so the word is "probably not". (two words for the price of one!)
that's fine, but it's just i am such a newbie at this sort of thing, i thought i had better ask.
i will stick with getting a PCI card with an internal 68 pin SCSI LVD socket then.
