The company I work for donated $1 million to the relief effort. On top of that a work buddy of mine drove down there on Saturday with his pickup truck and trailer full of water, canned goods, etc that his church collected. I pitched in some money for gas (which doesn't go a long way at the current rates). I would like to have taken my own truck and trailer down but we already had plans for a family reunion and a baptism in the opposite direction. My uncle got a call while I was there asking him to go down to New Orleans and help out. He's the fire chief in a small town up north. He and several other volunteer fire fighters will be making the trip down to help out in any way they can.
I was at Myrtle Beach in my house about 1/2 mile from the water when Hurricane Hugo came through. It was a very trying time and there was massive damage but we didn't have the flood waters to deal with that the people in N.O. are having to deal with. Hopefully these people will get all the help they need to rebuild but I hope they are forbidden to rebuild in the same spot. New Orleans just plain needs to be moved to higher ground. This is the second time it's been wiped out and it will happen again no matter how strong the levees are built (in my opinion). Regardless, there are a lot of people in need that need help now. It has to be a desperate situation to lose your home, your job, access to any money that you might have, etc. I just can't imagine! I don't think there are any magic answers here, it's going to be a long recovery period and people need to step up to the plate and help others, along with helping themselves if they are able.
