Hi.

Begged, borrowed and stole enough money to think about
building a 64 bit system.

What I have in mind is something like a GIGABYTE AMD mobo, but,
cannot make up my mind whether to go for the
socket 764 or 939 platform.
If a 764 then do I go for the Sempron or Athlon64 processor?
Where I live, the top-end Sempron is about the same price as the
lower-end Athlon.

What I'll be installing will be FC4 32bit and then later on
FC4 64 bit versions. Mostly used for development work and need
the backward compatibility (up to a point that is)

Any suggestions?
Any body care to share their 64bit configs and what the do's and don'ts
are? 'specially software compatibility and installations!

This box will have to last a fairly long time as well, my current
youngest box is allready 3 years old.
(ASUS a7v266ex and 2000+ amd cpu)

The only 64 bit architectures I have run Linux on are UltraSPARC and Alpha. Of course there is no comparison between either of those and x86-64. Sounds like fun though!

I have actually looked into the same thing recently and have found a gigabyte b oard also that sounds to be the best deal. It is the Gigabyte K8NSC. It is a socket 939 ATX form factor with the nForce3 250Gb Northbridge chipset. It has 4 and 8x AGP (no pci express, only draw back). Comes with 4 DIMM slots that support dual channel DDR up to PC3200 (400 MHZ) with a capacity to hold 4 GB of memory (1 gig per slot). It has a 1600 MHZ front side bus and has onboard LAN that supports 10/100/1000 MB data transfer rates. Also has 8 channel on board audio.

I found it on TigerDirect for like $80.00 (K8NSC).

You may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere but Tigerdirect is usually pretty good about selling you brand new items where other places may give you a refurbished item in order to sell it cheaper.

I also found the mobo and cpu combo for around $280.00 on a site off of pricewatch (Combo). It has the AMD Athlon 64 3500 939 1MB 90nm Rev. E processor with the fan and heat sink.

My soon to be M/B is gonna be a ASUS A8N-E, its 939 board with SATA-2
and to this im thinking of a AMD X2 4200 or better.

That would be a sweet setup. Hope you have the bucks though. I looked into the same setup and the cheapest I found it was for $601.00 through a site off of pricewatch. This may even be refurbished. It seems the AMD chips are starting to rival Intel in price. What happened to the good ole' days of getting an AMD chip that would match, if not outperform it's Intel counterpart, for half the price?

ive saved alot of cash for this, and its gonna be two setups for the 939 M/B,
both will not have the X2 CPU tho. I have to upgrade wifeys computer too

I recon the cost for it all will be just above $3,200 (in todays current rating[from SEK to USD])
